We live in a grossly degenerate and evil age in which authentic Christian beliefs are increasingly criminalized, and where right standing is sacrificed at the altar of political correctness. Ours is a time when dissenting and failing to conform to the extreme liberal cancel-culture ideology has become a legitimate ground for public shaming, censorial suppression, private as well as government and workplace-sanctioned retribution (e.g., these days just saying “all lives matter” can cost you your job, or even your life).

Ours is also an age of blatant hypocrisy and double standards where the very same segments of society who cry and scream for tolerance and “inclusivity” wage a relentless war to eradicate Christianity.

Another sign of degeneracy of the present time is that it is a time when the governments imagine they have the right to dictate to Christ how His church ought to worship Him, whether it can or cannot assemble, and what it can and cannot say.

And finally, what is worst of all, we live in a time of spineless pop-corn Christianity that is Christianity only in appearance but not in substance; and in an age of cowardice where too many are silent who ought to be speaking up. Evil indeed in part prevails because those who know, or should know better, bow down to it for fear of repercussion. And so instead of being a part of the solution they become a part of the problem. Sadly, this includes so many professing Christians who are only willing to serve Christ when it costs them nothing (or very little), and keeps them out of conflict and inconvenience. And perhaps as a direct consequence of this, we have now reached the point where so many Christians have oxymoronically accepted the idea that church is not essential!! In doing so they have greatly dishonoured Christ and despised His sacrifice. Tragically, this group includes many Christian leaders who have shut the doors of their churches, apparently out of fear of a flu-like virus and in compliance with public health orders. Their lord evidently is not Christ but the state!

Now, there is no need to wonder about what Christ would say in response to such a callous attitude towards Himself and His ordinances by those who profess to be His faithful followers, for His Word, in fact, makes it crystal clear:

Then came one and told them, saying, Behold, the men whom ye put in prison are standing in the temple, and teaching the people. Then went the captain with the officers, and brought them without violence: for they feared the people, lest they should have been stoned. And when they had brought them, they set them before the council: and the high priest asked them, Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man's blood upon us. Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men. – Acts 5:25-29.

Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. – Hebrews 10:23-25.

Our Saviour shed His blood to purchase the church, and therefore deeming the church “unessential” is tantamount to deeming the blood of Christ unessential, which is a public act of blasphemy...Jesus Christ is the King of kings and the Lord of lords, and therefore we must honour and obey him above all earthly governments.” – Jacob Reaume (pastor, Trinity Bible Chapel, Waterloo, Ontario, All Elders of Trinity Bible Chapel Charged)

“Since when did Christians ignore the claims of Christ and allow themselves to be pushed into disobeying God? Since when did Christians fear a virus more than God? Even in real historic plagues, that killed millions horribly, believers always obeyed God and continued doing good and meeting together. What changed so much that a glorified Influenza epidemic could terminate worship?” – Paul Fahy (Christian minister, An Alert to Believers)

Professing Christianity has indeed descended far deep into the abyss of a great apostasy when it fears more a flu-like virus than it cares about honouring God and His Word!! When Black Death – the most fatal pandemic recorded in the human history – ravaged Europe, and according to estimates killed 60% of its population (killing well over 50% of those who contracted the infection, unlike the new flu-like virus which only kills about 0.26% of those infected!!), churches did not shut their doors to the people. Nay, because the times of crisis are times where churches should and must be most open!!!

“There is a massive assault by the enemy on the church; yet no one seems to be aware of it. This shows the level of deception being used by Satan: the church is being attacked and it is asleep at the wheel...One obvious illustration of the effect of this battle is that all church worship services have been shut down unconstitutionally – and no one complained or rebelled; everybody sleepwalked into compliance. This has never happened in history before. Fellowship has been forbidden many times but churches always disobeyed that order and met in secret. Many paid with their lives.” – Paul Fahy (An Alert to Believers)

“...imagine that in those ages past, Luther, Zwingle, Calvin, and their compeers had said, “The world is out of order, but if we try to set it right we shall only make a great row, and get ourselves into disgrace. Let us go to our chambers, put on our night-caps, and sleep over the bad times, and perhaps when we wake up things will have grown better.” Such conduct on their part would have entailed upon us a heritage of error. Age after age would have gone down into the infernal deeps, and the infectious bogs of error would have swallowed all. These men loved the faith and the name of Jesus too well to see them trampled on. Note what we owe them, and let us pay to our sons the debt we owe our fathers. It is today as it was in the Reformers’ days. Decision is needed. Here is the day for the man, where is the man for the day?” – Charles Spurgeon (Holding Fast the Faith)

The church is in trouble. You know what the problem behind the problem is? We are in a leadership crisis. The leaders have become a joke. They are the combination of all the characters of the Wizard of Oz: scarecrows, no intellect or critical thinking skills [or rather, they fail to use them, which is far worse, for it is no sin to be feeble-minded, but it is sin to abdicate all God-given responsibility and allow the government and the mass media to do all the thinking for you] – just trust the government; tin-man with no passions in their hearts, no jealousy for the truth, no anger over evil, no sickness over the abuse of the body of Christ and His blood-bought bride, and they are lions with no courage...we are being led by men without chests...But someone has to point the nation back to God.” – Jacob Reaume (The Problem Behind Our Problems: Where Are the Shepherds?", Ezekiel 34:1-10)

According to their deeds, accordingly he will repay, fury to his adversaries, recompence to his enemies; to the islands he will repay recompence. So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him. – Isaiah 59:18-19.
