Lecture 5: End lockdowns NOW! – Reckless advice or good science?

A year has passed since the whole world accepted the idea that national lockdowns and stay-at-home orders are a solution to curb down the impact of a new respiratory virus. And what has initially been sold to the public as a 2-3 weeks temporary measure to flatten the curve, morphed into a more or less permanent intrusion into normal life – the so called, “new normal.”  The question however that needs to be asked is why indeed has the vast majority of the world’s population accepted lockdowns as a legitimate measure to prevent excess morbidity and mortality from a viral respiratory disease? Is quarantining entire populations of healthy individuals truly a scientifically-based measure that has successful historical precedents? Are the governments of the world truly “following the science” by their continual imposition of lockdown orders to this very day? To some these questions may sound trivial, if not offensive. They are nonetheless crucial since, as one author notes,

“The lockdowns in most Western countries have thrown the world into the most severe recession since World War II and the most rapidly developing recession ever seen in mature market economies. They have also caused an erosion of fundamental rights and the separation of powers in large part of the world, as both democratic and autocratic regimes have misused their emergency powers and ignored constitutional limits to policy. It is therefore important to evaluate whether and to which extent the lockdowns have worked as officially intended” – Christian Bjørnskov (Did Lockdown Work? An Economist’s Cross-Country Comparison)
